Mrs.
Hixson's kindergarten class has been working on a quilt project...we'd like to
share some with you.
Shoo Fly
Represented a real person who would help the
runaways. The Shoo Fly would help the people until it was safe for them to
continue on. Favorite hiding places were churches caves or even
graveyards.
Wagon Wheel
Wagon wheel meat it was time to get ready. Pack up
belongings you have, which wasn’t mach. Take what would be essential for
survival.
The wagon was also symbolic of a chariot
that was to carry them home.
Along with the wagon wheel were
sunbonnets worn by women who rode on wagons. By lowering their heads, the
bonnets acted as disguises and helped slaves get closer to freedom.
The Drunkards Path
told runaway slaves to hide
their tracks by back tracking their escape in a different direction.
Hopefully by doing this several times, those following the runaways would
get confused and give up the chase.
The Bear’s
paw told runaway slaves to watch
for bear tracks in the spring. After hibernating all winter, bears would
be hungry and would go looking for food and water. Runaways would watch
for bears tracks- know the tracks would lead to food and water.
Flying Geese
If you followed the geese in the
spring- they would lead you North to freedom.
