Letter from the Principal:

Dr. Norma ZavalaHello Bailey Gatzert Families and Community,

Bailey Gatzert staff believes that by working together (School, family and community) we can and will create a safe learning environment that provides a culturally relevant rigorous education for our children. It is by working together that we will build on the learning that begins in the family. The foundation that has been established in the home, along with school educational experiences, provides our students with the academic and social skills that are necessary for their success in elementary, middle, high school, and college. At Bailey Gatzert, we believe that by instilling respect for oneself and others, responsibility, cooperation and learning problem solving skills, students will gain the social skills necessary to work successfully with others in school, family and community situations.

We are committed to provide every student with an educational plan that includes: reading, writing, and math. More specifically, we are focusing this year on math. Everyday, all students from kindergarten through fifth grade will have 90-minute literacy and 60 minute math blocks. Students will be given math and reading homework everyday. We need your help in communicating that homework is important by providing a quiet time/space for your child to do his/ her homework everyday after school.

Each of you supports learning everyday that you engage in conversations with your child. Learning is occurring every time that you read together, discuss the plot, characters, or what you think might have happened next in a movie, play, or story. Working on homework together as a family will also help instill the importance of responsibility and build a positive work ethic that will last a lifetime.

Please spend some time reading the Bailey Gatzert Handbook and reviewing the expectations and rules with your child. It is available on this website and a hardcopy will be provided to each family attending Bailey Gatzert. Thank you for enrolling your child at Bailey Gatzert. We are committed to working with you this year to provide your child a culturally relevant and excellent education this year.

Dr. Norma Zavala
