Denny Middle School PTSA Meeting
September 25, 2007 Denny Middle School Library 7:00PM

The meeting was announced in the school bulletin. Present: The four board members and 11 others.

Call to Order/Introductions: President MP called the meeting to order at 7:00PM. All present introduced themselves.

Principal’s Report: JC said he was pleased with the smooth start to the school year. He gave suggestions to increase PTSA participation and spoke about various instructional programs.

Treasurer’s Report: CR reviewed the written budget summary proposal for 2007-2008 and asked that a decision be made on whether the garden fund of $1104.82, which is included in the PTSA account, will be used or rolled back into the general fund.
Ø Action: Principal JC will speak to KR about garden fund.
LS moved to approve the budget as presented. The motion was seconded and passed unanimously.

Fundraising: The meeting discussion centered on the topic of fundraising, as follows:
· The importance of partnerships with teachers for fundraisers to be successful. Strategies of other schools were shared, including tying fundraisers to specific goals.
· The ASB and Band also fundraise for student council sponsored activities such as dances and music trips. ASB advisor and head of music department, Marcus Pimpleton, was unable to attend the meeting, but wanted to raise the issue of these two groups benefiting from eScrip or similar programs.
· Whether it is more efficient to ask for cash donations rather than organize fundraisers such as Elemonade because of the effort required. A point was made that students develop marketing and other skills while fundraising.
· Holding a drive to increase enrollment in the Safeway eScrip, WaMoola and Target programs although with Target participants need to have a credit card. Have a kick-off at an assembly or fall dance.
· An easy way to raise funds is to designate a school when giving through United Way.
· Organizing read-a-thons, walk-a-thons and jump-a-thons which are fun and promote reading and fitness. Vice President PC pointed out that any funds raised on school property during the school day go to the ASB so PTSA needs to plan accordingly.
· Based on school/staff needs, a suggestion was made for the PTSA to focus on volunteer support instead of fundraising. The volunteer binder needs to be updated to include time column so volunteer hours can be calculated and promoted.
Ø Action: CR will update the office volunteer book.
· No response to the President’s plea to form a fundraising committee.

The meeting adjourned at 8:10PM.
