Denny Middle School is a wonderfully diverse learning community focused on high academic expectations for all students. Outstanding and dedicated teachers engage every student in a challenging curriculum, and innovative block scheduling allows time for interactive and effective student-centered instruction. At sixth grade, two teachers team together to work with sixty students. With an emphasis on integrated curriculum, we teach combined subject matter - Language Arts/Social Studies and Math/Science - in two-hour block classes. Exploratory classes include Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, Proyecto Saber (a Latino-focused academic and cultural class), Family Life, Health, and many musical and artistic opportunities. Two computer labs and Internet access in every classroom support students in their learning. Our entire school community is committed to providing an outstanding education for each student, eliminating the achievement gap, and infusing the celebration of our diversity into learning.
-
K-12 Alignment: Denny is participating in ongoing collaboration with local elementary schools and Chief Sealth High School - starting with alignment of rigorous mathematics and reading opportunities from school to school.
-
Pathway with Chief Sealth: By taking advantage of our close proximity and shared commitment to high academic expectations, Denny and Sealth are forming a pathway to help every student prepare for college and future life as a life-long learner. Denny and Sealth teachers are jointly planning curriculum to prepare Denny students to meet the academic challenge provided by the Sealth International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, anticipated to be offered at Sealth beginning Fall 2007.
-
Instructional Music: Directed by our award winning music instructor, the marching band, jazz band, and orchestra won trophies at Disneyland’s Music in the Park Festival. Participation in the music program is tailored for the beginning to the advanced music student, including concert band, marching band, orchestra, jazz band, mariachi band, steel drums, and world music choir.
-
Art: Partnerships with the Seattle Repertory Theatre and Paramount Theatre, and a dynamic visual arts program, provide multiple opportunities for students to develop their artistic talents.
-
Literacy Support: The seventh year of a large literacy grant continues to support school transformation efforts. We have staff trained in advanced literacy strategies, and literacy is taught “across the curriculum.”
-
Math/Science: Our approach to mathematics and science education is grounded in the development of critical thinking skills. Students learn through hands-on projects and experiments - giving them skills to solve problems as well as to read and write scientifically. Our students won the most improved award at the district Algebrathon and Math Olympiad. Denny also won “Best Overall” in the district Science Fair.
-
Advanced Learning (Spectrum): We offer Spectrum for students who are academically accelerated. The Spectrum curriculum is designed to develop a rigorous approach to learning by applying thinking skills to subject areas. Sixth grade Spectrum students are self-contained for humanities, mathematics, and science. Advanced mathematics classes challenge students on the next grade levels. Students are mainstreamed for exploratory, music, and PE classes.
-
Strong Relationships: At Denny, we are committed to building strong relationships with every student and family. Our new home visit program provides staff a chance to really get to know individual students and their families. The active PTSA is a key component of our success - family involvement is welcome and encouraged. The slogan “We All Belong” was developed as part of a school-wide anti-bullying program. Assemblies, classroom meetings and other events foster a positive school environment for all students.
-
Our Community Learning Center provides academic, social and cultural enrichment activities after school and on early-release days. Students can participate in activities such as drama, jazz band, tutoring, science club, and athletic teams.
-
A Neighborhood Health Center in the school offers basic health care by a nurse practitioner, and mental health care by certified counselors. Grade level counselors, school nurse, home school coordinator, and a full-time intervention specialist guide students in a positive and nurturing way.
Come for a visit to see our students shine!
