SWIMMING PROGRAM
ACADEMIC PLAN
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The emphasis of this course is to help students feel comfortable in the water and enjoy the water safely. Students are taught fundamental aquatic skills which are built upon as they progress through the swim program. Training techniques will also be incorporated as skill level permits.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course, students should:
Feel comfortable in the water.
Develop good attitudes and safe practices in and around the water.
Improve knowledge and skills required in basic emergency situations including life guarding.
Show improvement in swimming and water rescue strokes as well as competitive swim starts, turns, and dives.
Demonstrate an increase level of physical fitness.
Value participation in aquatic activities as an important part of your lifestyle.
GRADING:
Course grading will be based on four general criteria’s: ‘U. R. P. E.’
U - Uniforms (Swim suits):
It is recommended that students purchase swim suits and bring towels. Swim suits for girls consist of one piece suits and/or two piece suits with a plain shirt worn over the top of the suit. Swim suits for boys consist of swim shorts with tie strings. Again a plain shirt can be worn over the top of the suit.
Students will be given 3 non-dress days per quarter. If a student surpasses 3 without a note from home, the grade will be lowered one letter grade.
If a student is ill and needs to be out of the pool for a maximum of three days, a note from home will be accepted. Any illness lasting longer than three days will require a doctor’s note.
R -Respectful, responsible, Readiness (On Time):
P - Participation
Students receive daily points for participation, sportsmanship conduct, and following established
Physical Education Department rules. Skill tests are given, but results are used to assess student progress rather than establish grades. Red Cross Certificates are awarded on the basis of competency (pass and/or fail only).
E - Effort
Demonstrate improvement in water safety knowledge, skill performance, and swimming endurance.
Absence, tardiness, and bad attitudes will be viewed unfavorably.
SAFETY
Following safety guidelines and procedures. Demonstrating and understanding of basic water safety and emergency procedures. (Please turn page over for specific pool safety rules).
