Course outline:
Section 1 introduction of Chinese phonetics, writing symbols as well as China
Culture: Locate China on a map of the world; Locate and identify five cities and two rivers on a map of China.
Section 2 greeting, self-introduction, introduction of others
Culture: Titles for people; Respect for older people; Age-asking etiquette;
Section 3 numbers, time, dates as well as colors
Culture: Finger counting; Lucky and unlucky numbers; Lunar and solar calendar.
Section 4 school supplies
Culture: Characters – radicals and sounds; Early Chinese inventions.
Section 5 my family
Culture: Family size; One child policy in China; Addressing (family members); Surnames (family names); Women keep their own last names after marriage.
Section 6 pets at home
Culture: The twelve animal of the Chinese zodiac; Why these twelve animals? The giant panda.
Section 7 I can speak Chinese
Culture: Mandarin, the official Chinese language; dialects in China.
Section 8 sports
Culture: 2008 Olympics in Beijing; the most popular ball game – ping pong.
Section 9 my friend
Culture: Different educational systems in China and America; an ordinary day of a Chinese student.
Section 10 food and drinks
Culture: Four major Chinese cuisine; American and Chinese table manners;

Class Objectives

This course explores basic spoken and written expression in the Chinese language, and it concentrates on mastery of the sounds and tones of that language . The goals are to help you:
· develop an awareness of Chinese language and its culture;
· develop basic communication skills necessary to function in daily life and to express your needs and interests.
The students are expected to achieve the following goals by the end of the semester:

Listening
* The student should be able to listen and catch Chinese Pinyin and tones accurately.
* The student should be able to understand simple questions and answer them accordingly.
* The student should be able to comprehend short dialogues and passages with familiar vocabulary read or spoken by Chinese natives at a normal speed.

Speaking
* The student should be able to address people appropriately in Chinese.
* The student should be able to ask and answer basic questions in Chinese.
* The student should be able to talk about everyday activities in Chinese with reasonable accuracy and fluency.
* The student should be able to handle simple survival situations in Chinese (self-introduction, initiating conversations, shopping, asking for directions, etc.).

Reading
* The student should be able to recognize 100 Chinese vocabulary words.
* The student should be able to understand short passages about familiar topics.

Writing
* The student should be able to write Chinese phonetic symbols (Pinyin) correctly.
* The student should be able to know the principles of writing Chinese characters (stroke order, radicals, etc.).

Culture
* Gain knowledge and understanding of Chinese culture.

Class Requirements

Attendance: Please arrive to class on time. You are expected to attend every class. If you have a conflict, please speak with me about it.

Preparation: The student is expected to work outside of class. Routine preparation for class includes listening to the audio files, writing characters, studying the vocabulary, patterns and texts, reading the textbooks and notes.

3. Assignments:
Written: character (vocabulary) exercises, integrated exercises.
Oral: 1) Read out loud.
2) Conversation practices.

Bring all materials to the class every day: textbook, workbook, a notebook, a
binder/folder for all handouts and assignments, pen or pencil, index cards, and any
homework due on that day. No late assignments are accepted in this class.

5. Participation in class is mandatory and will be counted towards the final grades.

6. No make-up quizzes, tests, exams or late work will be allowed in this class without legitimate reasons. Students are responsible for the classes missed and are expected to catch up with the regular class when returning to class. If extra help from the teacher is needed, please make an appointment with the teacher in advance. Missing assignments will be taken into account towards the final grade.

7. The student should always be respectful to the teacher and the classmates. Students will be responsible for any misbehavior in class.
