Course Description
- This course provides the 8th graders in special education with an experience in developing higher-order thinking skills through the use of CMP curriculum along with stimulating activities that are designed to accommodate differing learning styles, abilities, and interests.
Special projects, or other unique experiences as a part of class: Multiple intelligences are used as an organizing structure as well as an instructional tool when designing classroom materials and assignments.
Expected Outcomes (As a result of taking this class, a student will be able to…): The student will develop the ability to meet WASL standards and understand realize the relevance and scope of mathematics in their lives.
Assessments used: Brigance Academic Skill Inventory and Curriculum-Based Assessment tools adopted at the school and district levels. In addition, journal entries at Bloom’s taxonomy levels, games and quizzes, teacher- or student-made tests, scrapbooks or notebooks, observation records, conferences, and checklists will be utilized in the classroom as formative and summative assessment tools.
Materials used: CMP curriculum, WASL preparation books, remedial curriculum, and Northwest Case Study Project.
The Learning experiences: Application, connections, extension, and reflections are the major four stages through which students will be guided to learn and understand new concepts and apply them to solving everyday, real-life problems. CMP curriculum emphasizes cooperative learning, group sharing, verbalizing concepts and ideas, efficient researching, and writing clearly in mathematics.
