Math 7
Mr. Botley

Teacher Bio: This is my 13 th year teaching and 3 rd at Denny Middle School. Prior to teaching at Denny I taught at John Marshall for 7 seven years and Sacred Cedars Academy for 3 years. Currently, I am also a part-time math instructor at Edmonds Community College where I have been for the past 6 years. When I am not a Denny, I love to spend time with my family, reading, and working out at the gym. Last year my wife and I were blessed to give birth to our first son who is now 6 months old. My professional goal is to continue to grow as a teacher through learning more instructional math strategies.

Math Course Description

This course covers the topics listed below. Students learn to recognize and generalize patterns and relationships and apply this knowledge to increasingly more difficult problems.

Units will cover:
• An Introduction to Algebra: variables, tables, graphs and symbols as representations
• Similarity: similar figures with congruence as a special case
• Proportional Reasoning: rate, ratio, proportion, and percent
• 3-D Measurement: surface area and volume
• Integers: operations with positive and negative numbers
• Linear Relationships: expressed in words, tables, graphs and equations
• Probability: expected value.

Required Materials
* Denny Planner (used to help students monitor their homework and projects)
* Spiral notebook
* Supply of pens (blue/black/red), pencils, and erasers
* Ruler
* CMP II textbook (provided)
* Calculator

Optimal Learning Environment
In order to achieve the optimal learning environment, students need to understand and acknowledge the importance of maintaining a positive, respectable and safe classroom at all times. Students are expected to always conduct themselves with outstanding classroom etiquette, and be respectful, responsible and friendly, as described in our Dream Big – Denny Big Five. Students are also expected to follow the My Best Performance Rubric for their assignments. Students need to come prepared with all the necessary materials and a positive attitude to learn.

Standards Taught in Class
The student understands and applies the concepts and procedures of mathematics.
The student uses mathematics to define and solve problems.
The student uses mathematical reasoning.
The student communicates knowledge and understanding in both everyday and mathematical language.
The student understands how mathematical ideas connect within mathematics, other subject areas, and real-life situations.

Parent/Guardian Support
Please encourage your student to do his/her homework daily. Students should always be working on their multiplication tables, fractions and basic operational (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) skills.

You are always welcome in the classroom and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions/concerns, or wish to participate in any of our activities.

Grading Policy
A = 90% - 100%
B = 80% - 89%
