In my classroom, parents and students can expect high standards. The individual learner is encouraged to work to reach those standards and beyond. Learning is serious, but at the same time, learning can be fun. Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child's education.
Students can achieve high standards through challenges, patience, encouragement, and expectations.
For math-know their adding and subtracting facts.
For reading- Read to their child, having their child read to them, or having their child read silently to themselves at least 30 minutes daily.

Hi, my name is Gretchen Unseth and I teach a 2nd grade. I've been here at Dearborn Park since 1986. This is a wonderful school with a lot to offer our students.
In our classroom we have Literacy Centers 4 days a week. Literacy Centers are where children work in small groups, doing activities that support our reading program. We also team with Mr. Russell for other subject areas. We have a volunteer come in every Wednesday and work with us on Etnobotony. Just ask the kids what that is. We are also involved with Learning for Life which teaches social skills. We do Writers Workshop everyday for 45 to 60 minutes. They have been doing a wonderful job on their writing.
I would like for the children to read every night for 20 to 30 minutes. Have your child do journal writing. Another important activity is to talk with your child. Each one of you have important information to share. Enjoy your child they are very unique.
