Betty Holland

Hello/Hola. My name is Betty Holland. I teach English Language Development to students who are developing English Language skills. The previous term used for students of English was English as a Second Language (ESL). The new term is English Language Learner (ELL). I work with the classroom teachers to develop your student's reading, writing, and speaking skills.

I teach 2nd through 5th grade students English Language skills necessary for academic success in and out of school. In addition, I bring to the classroom my international experience and my own Hispanic background. I was an English Language Learner when I started 5th grade in the U. S. I encourage students to be proud of their dual languages and heritages; and of the significant importance that knowing two (or more) languages brings.

By experiencing a balance of positive support and challenging expectations, every student is able to succeed. Learning a new language can be a frustrating experience because we all learn differently. It is our differences that make us unique individuals. All of the teachers and staff at Dearborn Park value the diverse ethnic differences and contributions that your children bring to our school.

If there is one secret to success in life it is to be a reader. Read, read, read. Read to your children, have your children read to you, let them see you read. Have your children teach you what they have learned in school during the day. Remember this: Reading is the one skill that will bring you closer to where you want to be tomorrow!
