Summer Reading Tips for

Parents

Read aloud together with your child every day.

Make it fun by reading outdoors on the front steps, patio, at the beach or park.

Set a good example!

Parents, especially dads, must be willing to model behavior for their children.  This includes keeping lots of reading material around the house, having a book to read, and turning off the TV, video games, and computer.

Read the same book your child is reading.

Let kids choose what they want to read, and don’t turn your nose up at popular fiction.

Take your children to the library regularly.

Join the summer reading program and check the library calendar for special summer reading events.

Buy books on tape and listen to them in the car or listen as a family.

Subscribe to children’s magazines.

Some magazines you can subscribe to are Sports Illustrated for Kids, Highlights for Children, or National Geographic World.   Ask them what they think about, what they have read, and listen to what they say.

Make trips a way to encourage reading by reading aloud traffic signs, billboards, and notices.

Show y our child how to read a map and let him or her be the navigator.

Encourage your child to keep a summer scrapbook.

Tape in souvenirs of your family’s summer activities, postcards, ticket stubs, and photos.  Have your child write captions and read them aloud as you look at the scrapbook together.
