| Project Earth Care was created by Chief Sealth Sports &
Events Marketing students to establish a positive intergenerational experience,
along with environmental learning opportunities, in a pro-active educational
project.
The program is designed to form partnerships between K-12 schools, local colleges, community members and local government to identify and actively work on environmental projects that benefit the entire community. Project Earth Care offers a unique vertical alignment opportunity for grade, middle and high schools, with students at all levels directly involved in the project. Curricula is developed and provided to local schools, along with ideas
on how to get students involved with the environmental aspects of the
project. In the process, intergenerational learning groups are formed
that foster both student and adult mentoring opportunity’s and create
cooperative learning environments. |

| Working together, youth and adults acquired valuable insights
into the environment, while gaining a unique perspective of their neighborhood’s
history. This cooperation fostered increased understanding and mutual respect
while breaking down stereotypes and negative perceptions.
To date, students and community members have removed over 4,600 invasives and planted over 350 native trees, plants and shrubs. The project has been praised as a "Critical educational tool"
by The Alliance For Climate Protection and recognized by Nobel Peace Prize
Laureate Professor Wangari Maathai. |
