Chief Sealth High School Considering a New Mission Statement

To the greater Chief Sealth community:

The mission statement of a school communicates to the students, staff, and community the purpose of the school’s existence. It is the reason that we come to school every day, and it guides the way we provide a high quality educational experience for every student.

During the staff retreat in August, we examined the current mission statement - “To empower Sealth learners to be of value to themselves
and to others today and tomorrow” - and discussed its relevance to our school community today. Most staff members feel that the current mission statement does not capture all that Chief Seath High School is and has become.

Therefore, the Building Leadership Team has drafted three possible mission statements after gathering ideas from the staff. Those possible mission statements were shared with the staff on November 11, 2009, and are currently being considered. Student Rep Council will interact with the possible mission statements in December, and student feedback will be gathered.

Please take a moment to consider the following possible new mission statements, and we welcome feedback via a brief survey that can be found by clicking here.

1) Chief Sealth High School strives to engage every member in rigorous and relevant curriculum within a safe and supportive environment. We draw upon our unique resources to foster academic success, global participation and leadership.

2) Chief Sealth High School strives to be a community of life long learners in which every member engages in rigorous and relevant curriculum, and within a safe and supportive environment, experiences academic achievement. We draw upon the unique resources of our local and international community to foster global participation and leadership.

3) The mission of Chief Sealth High School, in partnership with the community, is to foster an environment that is safe and supportive of individual students, enabling them to achieve academic success. Enhanced by strong relationships, relevant curriculum, and rigorous expectations, the school community is committed to helping students develop a clear sense of global citizenship.

We are hopeful that Chief Sealth’s new mission statement, along with our renovated building, will give the entire community a renewed sense of commitment, energy, and purpose.
