Today, you will become more expert in the art of deciding which websites are reliable and good to use
for school projects, and which should not be trusted.

Read the article "Evaluating Websites"

Click on the links below, and read about how to evaluate websites:

Open a Word Document, and write a list of the 6-10 criteria you believe should be considered when a person tries to decide if a website is a reliable, scholarly, and appropriate for school research.

|Note: You may use criteria from the sites in Step 2 to build your list, or you may invent your own criteria.|

Save this document!

a.) Choose two of the following websites:

        1. http://descy.50megs.com/descy/webcred/webcred/dhmo.html
        2. http://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/
        3. http://www.improb.com/airchives/paperair/volume1/v1i1/barney.htm
        4. http://www.weathergraphics.com/tim/fisher/

b.) Copy/Paste the sentence below twice onto your Word document (created in Step 3):

The site |write site's name and URL here| would / would not be valuable for school research because
|list reasons here|.

c.) Complete the sentence twice, once for two different sites.

a.) Read over your list of 6-10 criteria.
b.) Answer these questions in complete sentences on your Word document:

    1. Did your list help you in step four?
    2. What criteria should be added/deleted to make it truly useful?

c.) Make changes to your list based on your answers.

If there is time, complete Step 6 below. Otherwise, go to Step 7.

a.) Look at these pairs/trios of websites:

      1. http://www.seattle.net/information/visitorguide/
        http://www.seattle.gov/html/visitor/

      2. http://www.thocp.net/biographies/gates_bill.htm
        http://www.microsoft.com/billgates/default.asp
        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Gates
      3. http://www.berner.org/
        http://descy.50megs.com/akcj3/bmd.html

b.) Using your list of 6-10 criteria, choose which of the pair/trio would be the better choice for a student doing research.

c.) Write the URL of the site you think is better, and write a sentence or two (using your list of criteria) explaining your choice.

Make final revisions to your Word document.

Be sure your name is on top.

Print!

You will hand your list to your teacher as your ticket out the door today.
