At B.F. Day, we serve students and families from many Seattle neighborhoods. Some of these neighborhoods have hardly changed in years; others are economically and socially challenged and seem to be in a constant state of transition.
With that in mind, we cannot assume that our students get all the support they need at home or that they even have a home. We also know that the real basics, such as healthy food, warm clothing, and emotional and physical safety, are not always available to our students. Without those basics, students rarely are ready to learn.
Thats why B.F. Day has become an extended family to many students and parents, and why we strive to meet many needs here under the B.F. Day roof. Nourishing meals, clothing, drug abuse prevention, guidance, mental health services, mentoring and cultural heritage programs are just some of the ways we are doing this.
B.F. Day, the family school, provides a positive learning environment that has resulted in our students making steady gains in the area of academic achievement for the last several years. This year we are setting our sights higher than ever. Our Academic Achievement Plan calls for increased achievement at significant levels for all of our children.
We cannot achieve our goals alone. It is you -- the parents, the people of the Fremont community, Wallingford community and also our extended community along with representatives from the Seattle School District, local businesses, and non-profit organizations -- who help make it possible for us to fill the hearts and educate the minds of some very special children. It is our hope that these children will then go forth, be successful in school after they leave B.F. Day, and make a difference in the lives they touch in their families and communities.
