Educational Fundamentals at Alki

Our passion for student learning begins with a strong focus on educational fundamentals.

Literacy

In addition to a standard literacy curriculum, Alki utilizes Read Naturally, Accelerated Reader Program, and Sound Partners to ensure all students are challenged to progress in reading levels. The "Alki Reads" program encourages every student to read at least 20 minutes a day with the goal of fostering healthy reading habits to last a lifetime.

Writing and Spelling

Using the new and exciting Writers Workshop curriculum, teachers are helping students to develop their writing skills in a meaningful and personalized manor. Teachers have also implemented a spelling program that integrates traditional spelling methods with more in-depth word study skills.

Math

Our students and teachers are very excited about taking on the district’s new curriculum, Everyday Mathematics. To support the important skills learned in this program, we are also adopting Singapore Math, a more drilled approach to learning math facts. As a community, math is enriched through our family fun events such as Mathnificent Night. Families play math games together and enjoy the fun side of this very important fundamental.

Science

Using the district standard National Science Foundation curriculum, Alki works hard to foster curiosity about the natural world surrounding our students. We are fortunate to be located between two natural classrooms, the old-growth forest of Schmitz Park and the marine ecosystem of Puget Sound. Our school courtyard is a certified National Wildlife Foundation habitat. Additionally, we enrich our standard curriculum with a program to raise and release salmon, the Audubon Finding Urban Nature program, Environmental Camp, and a PTA-sponsored Naturalist Program.
