Room 13’s Antique Radio Show Hits it Big with the Elders

Letters of appreciation for When Radio Was King! by Larry Garfinkel.

This spring Libby Sinclair’s fifth grade class (Room 13) produced a re-creation of the 1930’s and 1940’s radio shows.  After it was shown to my 1st grade grand-daughter’s class, I was invited to a showing the next day at the school.

I enjoyed it so much that I felt it would also be enjoyed by my fellow residents at the Ida Culver House, a retirement community. I therefore helped make arrangements for the class to appear at our residence.

Everyone loved it!!  The presentation of scenes from radio shows such as Jack Benny, Burns and Allen, Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy struck a chord with the oldsters, and we especially liked the singing commercials of that era, such as Chiquita Banana, Pepsi Cola, and Brylcream. We joined the cast in singing them at the close of the show.

The 1930’s costumes and the props the children prepared were wonderful and showed that a lot of work had been put into the production.  We had a great time and talked about how much we had enjoyed the show.

Larry Garfinkel is grandfather of Maya (Room 9).  Much to the delight of his grandchildren, son and daughter-in-law, this year Larry moved from New York to Seattle.  Larry is a retired epidemiologist and pioneer in the area of the health effects of cigarette smoking.

Dear Ms. Libby Sinclair,
I am a newcomer resident (as of 1 week) at Ida Culverhouse.  It was a lovely presentation of “Room 13” today nostalgic of radio 30’3 and 40’s. Your Room 13 students did offer a most authentic performance which delighted all residents here.  Thank you and your staff and those wonderful students that graced our “home” today.  Congratulations to all involved.  I hope they receive accolades in the local press as well.  Their parents are accorded our applause as well.
Sincerely,
Sally Gallagher
