GO GREEN by Keara, Rm. 14
Global warming is creating a huge problem for all of the world. We, the human race, are causing it. Our cars and factories let off exhaust, which goes up and thickens the atmosphere. Sun rays are trapped on earth and are melting ice caps and glaciers at a too-fast rate. This causes animals such as polar bears to drown since they can’t find ice. But all is not lost … yet. By following these tips on how to stop global warming, we can save the world from a fiery end:
• walk, or ride your bike
• plant many trees
• ride the bus more often
• carpool
• reduce the number of things you buy that have to be shipped
• use recycled paper
• reduce your waste as much as possible
• don’t litter
• arrange an “item-loaning system” for your neighborhood. Make lists of what people are willing to lend each other and borrow from families instead of buying
• compost food products
• only buy new things if absolutely necessary and hand down old things if still usable
• bring reusable bags to the store
• use energy-efficient cars.
Good luck saving the planet!

Questions and Answers About the WASL
by Erin S.
What is the WASL?
The WASL is something that you take in 3rd 4th and 5th grade and a few other grades to, it is usually a packet of work or something like a narrative, and I’ve even heard that 5th graders take a science WASL. In 3rd grade you don’t get your WASL score and in 3rd grade you don’t have to write a narrative either, but next year you will probably have too.
What kind of questions are there?
Usually there are questions about things that you have been learning that year and there’s questions based on math or there could be stories with questions on the end.
Do I have to do it somewhere special or somewhere where no one can see my work?
Sort-of, some people go into room 12 and some people go to work in the portable, and some people just work in there classroom.
Are there any breaks?
Yes, there is a snack break where you get to talk but, you can’t talk about the WASL!
Am I being timed to see how fast I can go?
No, you have as long as the whole day as far as I know, and of coarse you can go to the restroom or get a drink of water if you need to.
Martin Luther King
By Maya S.
I would like to talk about Martin Luther King. He tried to stop war, but he made some people mad. Also at that time, they had a rule that there were separate places for people with different skin colors. He tried to change that. He is dead now, but if he had only lived longer, he probably would have had a chance to stop the war. One more thing, people had used guns to kill him. Guns are not cool. You should not even pretend to have a gun.
Respect Thornton Creek Pond – Update
By Sanna H.
A few weeks ago (see below) I reported about the pond in front of room 14. I asked to please respect the pond and the creatures in it. But after I reported that, Room 14 found about six or seven balls in the pond. We found about two balls a week floating on the pond. I think all the balls were the big Pogo ones.
The consequence our class decided is to keep the balls we find in the pond. At the end of the month our class will have a lot of balls to play with. We like getting balls, but we prefer to keep all things behind the rocks so nothing falls in. Including you!

The pond is in the courtyard by Room 14.
Respect Thornton Creek Pond 10/17/07
We found lots of things in the fish’s pond at Thornton Creek School. Room 14 and lots of other classes would like it if NO ONE touches the pond and people stay behind the rocks. If you see someone sticking something in the pond, please tell them to stop (and please don’t do it in the future). Remember, there are living creatures in there. Please respect the pond and the animals in it.
At the Science Assembly by Laura M.
Today we had an assembly. Two teachers came to our school and taught us how to be engineers. They showed us a bottle rocket and it shot up into the air and we laughed and cheered. It was very fun. The two teachers were from the Pacific Science Center. When they asked if anyone had been there, everyone raised their hands.

Vegetarians at Thornton Creek
by Keara B.
I asked 30 kids who go to Thornton Creek School about how much meat they eat. I did that because I’m a vegetarian, and I’d like more vegetarian choices at lunch. I think that because 17% of the school is vegetarian (based on the 30 people I asked), and there’s usually only one vegetarian choice at lunch. Sometimes a vegetarian buys lunch but the vegetarian choice is out. That can be problematic. Maybe there should be four lunch choices, and half be meat, half be non-meat. Here’s the percentages based on the 30 people I asked:
17% vegetarian (people who eat plants only, sometimes dairy)
50% omnivores (people who eat everything)
33% carnivores (people who eat meat every day)
Nova Herzog (The Lunch Lady) responds:
I try to make sure all kids who eat exclusively vegetarian have this choice available. I like to make sure everyone gets what they want at lunch time, but on a rare occasion, the one option with the vegetarian entrée might be out when you get there because the number of kids ordering lunches (including vegetarian) varies each day. I suggest you come in to see me before school starts and ask me to save you a vegetarian lunch. I am happy to do this. Aside from that, I want to remind all kids, vegetarian and otherwise, that all the lunch options contain ample fruits, vegetables and grain in addition to the entrée. You can order the ‘omnivore’ option but share the entrée with a ‘carnivore’ friend, and keep the fruits and veggies for yourself.

BIRTHDAYS by Laura M.
How do you celebrate your birthday? Some people and kids celebrate their birthdays at different, fun places like Odyssey 1, Paint the Town, and Funtasia. My birthday was last Sunday and I celebrated it at home. I invited my cousins to share cake and ice cream and a lovely time. I helped bake my cake and spread the frosting. I finished the last piece at snack today! I got lots of presents and one that is very special to me. It is a precious necklace whose symbol is a mother or father hugging a child. That’s my parents hugging me.
The Racoon Story by Laura M.
Have you ever seen a racoon? Well, a couple nights ago when we were all in bed, my dad came quietly into the room. He went to the window and opened the blinds, then he turned on the outdoor light. With an urgent whisper he asked me to get out of bed. "Quickly," he said, and when I looked out the window, I saw in our swimming pool a group of four teenage racoons with black masks. They were flipping and playing and almost popping the pool. They didn't hear at all that we were watching them, but after a couple of minutes we opened the door and mom said, "Hi!" and they all ran like crazy.
After a couple minutes, we went to the pool and dumped it over and all the water ran out. When they came back later, they got mad and knocked on the window in the middle of the night!
