The Mileage Club
An interview with Sue Doty
by Hans T.
Hans: Why did you start the Mileage Club?
Sue: I thought it was a good idea to help kids to think about exercise instead of sitting around and watching TV. It will help them start healthy lifestyle habits.
H: I like to walk outside on the field and watch the scenery at recess because it doesn’t get as boring.
S: And walking with friends at recess is a good way to share the experience. Kids will get a plastic foot for every 5 miles they walk, and a paper foot on the chart in the gym for ten miles or more.
H: How many kids are in the Club?
S: About 40 are enrolled now but some start to drop out when the weather gets rainy and cold. I hope kids continue. They can do laps indoors in the gym to get miles during the winter.
H: How many laps of the gym will make up a mile?
S: I don’t know but I do know that 5280 feet are in a mile. Will you come and measure it for me?
H: Sure. The inside of the gym measures 60' x 30'. This means a path inside the black line around the floor is about 180'. There are 5280' in a mile, so it would take about 29 laps around the gym to equal a mile.
S: Thank you, Hans!

Run !!!
by D’Angelo G., Room 6
The Seattle kids marathon is next month and it is at the Seattle Center. Last year more than 199 kids were there. It was a long jog/race/run/walk around the center and at the end there’s a lot of prizes. I want to warn you that last year lots of young kids got lost in the prize area but they announced the kids names on a loudspeaker so their parents could find them. Boy is it fun! You should bring water just in case. If you want to be on the Thornton Creek team for this year’s marathon, talk to Sue (gym teacher) by November 5th.
GYM REPORT
by Keara B.
P.E. (physical education) or gym teacher Sue Doty has been encouraging kids at Thornton Creek to get plenty of exercise at recess instead of chatting. But although about one third of the school is participating in the mileage club, the other two thirds say "I want to play with my friends, not walk laps around the field to get little plastic feet." Half of them actually want to get them, but the urge to play overcomes it. If you are one of these people, here are some suggestions.
- Pick one day or so to do mileage club, and play with your friends the other days.
- Pick a recess to do it, like lunch.

PE NEWS from the Gym – Fall 2007
Welcome to school for all new and returning students!
In order to be better prepared to fully participate in PE classes it would be helpful to wear a sturdy pair of rubber soled shoes, or have them in your locker ready for use during class.
If you’re interested in participating in a once a week unicycle club during lunch, bring in your own bike helmet if possible. We do have helmets at school for student use, however it requires wearing a haircover for health reasons. The day of week is yet to be determined(most likely Wednesday or Thursday).
As we begin the school year, our focus will be on personal and community safety, sportsmanship, playground games, rules and why they are necessary.
For 3rd grade and up, we will be doing the Fitnessgram fitness assessment throughout the year to show individual improvement and physical growth. We will do this by using the 5 components of fitness which are cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition (height & weight).
Volunteers would be helpful for gathering and entering this data.
New this year, 5th graders will participate in a pilot classroom based assessment titled Concepts of Health and Fitness. Together, we will reinforce the 5 components of health and fitness and then students will write a “Get Fit Summer” plan based on their own interests and goals sometime in May.
The district partnership with Cascade Bicycle Club continues this year. We will be focusing on bicycle safety for three weeks beginning November 5,2007. Cascade BC will deliver a classroom set of bikes for use during this time. We will also have a limited number of our own bikes available for student use.
If you have questions or comments, my school phone number is 206-252-5260
Looking forward to a great year,
