Music:
Teachers: Mary K. McNeill (Vocal music), Hank Voss (Hand drumming), Dan Yarr & Randall Davidson (Instrumental music)
Room: Annex

We offer our students a variety of musical experiences.

Hand drumming - Hank Voss leads our students and teachers in learning the powerful rhythms and varied techniqes of African and Caribbean drumming. Mastering the complicated drumming patterns is invigorating, challenging (requiring great concentration and listening skills), and fosters cooperation and personal growth; each child has a chance at leading the class on the big drum. As Hank advertises, participating in his class is a joyful experience: "Come one, come all!"

Instrumental music - The Thornton Creek Site Council has made funding instruction in the instrumental program a priority. As a result, this program is available to both fourth and fifth graders at the school. In addition, third-grade violinists with previous private instruction have the opportunity to participate in lessons at the school. (This is contingent on approval by the teacher.) Classes meet once a week during the regular school day. Basic instruments taught are violin, cello, flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone. Optional instruments taught when space is available are alto saxophone, baritone horn, bass clarinet, drum, oboe, and viola. Regular home practice is required. Lessons + Practice = Success!

Instrumental music develops reading and math skills, supports academic achievement, teaches problem-solving and teamwork, promotes communication across cultures, adds enjoyment to learning, and promotes community and a sense of belonging. And above all, music improves the quality of life!

For more information, contact John Miner, Thornton Creek principal.

Vocal music - Mary K has been teaching music in the Seattle Public Schools for the past ten years. An artist and activist, her philosophy is to empower children "to raise their voices through music: "One of the lines we sing is that 'we can make a difference/we are the children of the world.'" Mary K is the assistant conductor of the Pacifica Children's Chorus and the founder of Children Sing for Peace. Learn more about Mary K here.
