Academics at Adams

Students at Adams are appropriately challenged while learning the fundamentals in the following core areas:

Reading

Students are exposed to a wide variety of children’s literature and nonfiction writing. Phonics instruction and comprehension and higher level thinking skills are built into our literacy program in all our grades. Adams is dedicated to ensuring that students’ learning needs are met. To that end, we also offer extra academic support to students. With funding from our PTA and school budget, we are able to offer tutoring and one-to-one reading instruction. English language learners also benefit from additional tutoring and support in English and literacy skills. Our “Reading Buddy” program pairs kindergarten students with fourth and fifth graders, boosting self-esteem and building community. In addition, we participate in the Global Reading Challenge and the Million Word Reading Program.

Math

Ensuring all students attain math proficiency also receives high priority at Adams. Students receive a balanced program of instruction in computation skills and problem solving. The PTA also funds five math tutors who work on average 15 hours each week for the duration of the school year. Math tutors work with students one-on-one, in groups, and in an after-school homework club. Enrichment activities like our after school math and chess clubs give students an opportunity to explore mathematical concepts in a fun, hands-on way. Our school-wide Exploration in Math puzzle challenges are another way that we encourage math problem solving.

Science

The National Science Foundation sponsors our science program. Our teachers have continual training in “hands-on,” inquiry-based science education. Our students explore electrical circuitry, food chemistry and raising baby salmon. Art and science are integrated by teachers. For example, students learn drawing skills to enhance their scientific observations and recording. Students also get a chance to explore local, urban nature in the Finding Urban Nature program. Our integrated science program culminates in a four-day fifth grade environment education camp at Islandwood, where marine science is emphasized.
