A message from the Superintendent
May 7, 2013
Dear teachers,

Today marks the beginning of Teacher Appreciation Week.
As a former teacher, I want to say thank you. Thank you for the work you do each and every day. Thank you for your dedication, your professionalism and your enthusiasm. While I have been in Seattle for less than a year, it has been clear from day one that you, SPS’s teachers, are some of the best. Every day you create a tremendous impact on the lives of our students.
Few other professions touch as many people’s lives as teachers do. You are listeners, role models, mentors, explorers and more. You open students’ minds to new ideas and knowledge and support their dreams. While our entire district is here for the purpose of ensuring that students receive the very best education we can give them, it is you who has a lasting influence in shaping young minds.
Without teachers, I would not be your superintendent today. My teachers had a profound impact on my life. It was teachers who encouraged me to complete school and go on to college. Ultimately, the respect and gratitude I had for teachers helped me to make the decision to go into education so that I too could provide that guidance to another group of students.
It has been a pleasure to meet many of you and it remains an honor to serve as your superintendent. Quality teaching is the major way we can create a better future. Thank you for all you do. I remain committed to you and the work we do together.
Sincerely,

José Banda
Superintendent
