Ballard, Roosevelt and Garfield students take first in state Solo and Ensemble Contest

Students from Ballard, Roosevelt and Garfield high schools won top  honors in the prestigious Washington State Solo and Ensemble Contest held April 26-27 at Central Washington University. Students from Ballard, Roosevelt and Garfield high schools took first place in their categories.

The WIAA/WMEA State Solo and Ensemble Contest provides the opportunity for the finest of Washington's high school music students to hear each other in a competitive situation.

The ensemble contest includes "small" and "large" ensembles in seven categories: Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, Strings, Women's Vocal, Men's Vocal and Mixed Vocal.

There are 29 solo categories, including seven Woodwind categories, five Brass, four Percussion, four Strings, six Vocal, Piano, Guitar and Harp.

The students who won as a group and as individuals in various categories were:

Congratulations to the Ballard High School Men's Quartet and Director of Choirs Courtney Rowley, center, for their 1st-place win at the Solo and Ensemble Competition. Men's Quartet members Gerson Tschider, George Chrisafis, Logan Monson and Spencer Johnson competed against 21 other men's vocal ensembles from across the state to take home this top prize. This win marks the first time a Ballard ensemble has taken the top prize at the WIAA state music championship
