Garfield student wins 2013 National Achievement Scholarship
Officials of the National Merit Scholarship Program announced the name of a Seattle Public Schools’ student who is a winner in the 49th annual National Achievement Scholarship Program.
Celina Emily Jackson attends Garfield High School and will receive a $2,500 scholarship for undergraduate study. Jackson is among 700 distinguished high school seniors nationwide who won awards this year.
Established in 1964, the privately financed academic competition recognizes scholastically talented Black American high school seniors.
More than 160,000 students initially entered the competition when they took the 2011 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. To advance in the competition, students needed to demonstrate high academic performance, be recommended by a school official, earn SAT scores consistent with their PSAT scores, and write an essay.
The scholarships total over $2 million and are financed by grants from 34 corporate organization and professional associations, and by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
