Caroline Kennedy visits Sanislo as part of National Library Week
Caroline Kennedy visited the Sanislo Elementary School library April 8 as part of her ongoing work as honorary chair for National Library Week. Kennedy, the daughter of President John F. Kennedy, is an attorney and has published several books.
At Sanislo, Kennedy visited with a first-grade class and met with students from the school's Poetry Club. The students recited several poems: “Liberty, by Janet S. Wong" and “The Dream Keeper," and "Dream Variations" both by Langston Hughes.
Kennedy and poetry club students from Sanislo Elementary will also be appearing tonight (April 8) at Seattle First Baptist Church. Poetry club members will join her to talk about her poetry anthology, "Poems to Learn by Heart."
The book is a diverse collection of more than a hundred poems – divided into sections about nature, sports, monsters and fairies, friendship, and family. It includes several well-known works, including "Paul Revere's Ride" by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow," Casey at the Bat," by Ernest Lawrence Thayer, and "Gettysburg Address," by Abraham Lincoln.
Kennedy is well-known as an author of works on American history, politics and poetry, as well as for continuing the Kennedy family tradition of public service. Her best-selling books include "She Walks in Beauty: A Woman's Journey Through Poems" and "A Family of Poems." Kennedy's visit to Seattle was sponsored by the American Library Association.
