Pathfinder K-8 girls take second place,
Madrona K-8/Broadview-Thomson K-8 take third place

The McClure Middle School boys team won first place Feb. 9 in the Team Relay Heat of Erg Ed’s Indoor Rowing Championship. Eight middle school programs were represented at the Ergomania regionwide indoor rowing competition.

In second place were the Pathfinder K-8 girls, and in third place were the Madrona K-8/Broadview-Thomson K-8 team.

Launched in 2010, Erg Ed is a classroom-based indoor rowing education program operating as part of Seattle Public School's physical education curriculum. This innovative program uses rowing as a tool to support lifelong fitness, continued participation and improved water access.

Erg Ed provides indoor rowing machines, technology and highly qualified instructors so that teachers and students can access rowing -- without ever leaving their classroom.

In partnership with Seattle Public Schools, Erg Ed is currently provided at 14 middle and K-8 schools across the city. This year approximately 30 Erg Ed students from six different schools, signed up for the Feb. 9 event. With very limited rowing experience, the Erg Ed students excelled against other seasoned rowers and placed top three in many of the events they participated in.

The students competed as both individuals and in teams. The following are the SPS Erg Ed students who placed in the top three:

Ergomania • 11 year old girls
First place: Laela Leslie from Pathfinder K-8

• 11 year old boys
Third place: Dhakari Washington from Madrona K-8

• 12 year old boys
Third place: Ibrahim Mushtaq from Madrona K-8

• 13 year old girls
First place: Aaliyah Henry from Pathfinder K-8
Third place: Alyssa Lam-Yeun from Pathfinder K-8
