Information in article written by Hawthorne Elementary
professional development coach used as model in other school districts
Information in an article written by Jacque Ensign, a professional development coach at Hawthorne Elementary School, has been published in a national professional journal and is being modeled by other school districts across the region.
The article – about the District’s work in elementary math that helps teachers learn ways to present differentiating math lessons – was published was in the October issue of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Teaching Children Mathematics.
The article is titled, “Teacher Initiated Differentiation: Two Classrooms Become Models for Their Large Urban District.”
Because of the regional national publicity in the journal, several teachers and coaches from the Lake Washington and Tacoma school districts are observing Hawthorne’s K-5 classrooms as teachers use the differentiated math instruction (photo above).
Also, Carol Ann Tomlinson, the originator of “differentiation,” is using the article with educators who are learning from her how to use differentiation in classrooms.
