South Lake High School teachers lead Districtwide student voter registration drive as part of civics lesson
Two Seattle Public Schools teachers organized and recently completed the first-ever Districtwide student voter registration drive.
The K-12 registration drive, which was organized by South Lake High School teachers Chris Syriclla and Web Hutchins, is a part of Hutchins’ Civics for All Initiative. The initiative proposes to make Seattle the model civics education city in the nation and to increase civics instruction in social studies in all grades.
Schools citywide worked to increase student participation in getting their parents, family members, and communities to register to vote. West Seattle High School and Bagley Elementary School received kudos for the highest participation rates.
With the support of Scottie Nash, Literacy and Social Studies instructional coach, Social Studies teachers at all Seattle high schools made a long-term commitment to the drive and to registering all 18 year old students.
