Three teachers, who were selected to participate in a monthlong summer seminar in Japan, are sharing what they learned about the country with other educators.

The teachers are:
• Mary Mills, fourth-/fifth-grade multi-age teacher from Sacajawea Elementary;
• Pam Hering, U.S. History and World History from Ballard High School; and
• Nani Castor-Peck, fifth-grade English teacher from John Stanford International School.

The teachers were part of a group of 12 Northwest teachers chosen from five states for the Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad, a program to increase American understanding of East Asia.

The four-week seminar started at Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, followed by educational travel to other parts of Japan to explore regional diversity. Both parts of the seminar addressed themes that are key to understanding contemporary Japan and the underlying history shaping the Japan of today.

The group spent time working together online and in Japan to develop materials to help other educators teach effectively about Japan.

The seminar was supported by the U.S. Department of Education and the Freeman Foundation through grants to the East Asia Resource Center at the University of Washington. The seminar was also supported by Freeman Foundation and the Hyogo Business and Cultural Center.
