Washington student recognized for scientific achievement
Elliott Hoppe, a 2011-2012 Washington Middle School student has been selected as a State Merit Winner in the 14th annual Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge.
Hoppe was the only student from Washington to place. Having earned his place as a top performer, he will receive a 3M Shoot N’ Share Camcorder and a special certificate to recognize his achievement.
Discovery Education and 3M partnered to encourage students in grades 5-8 to pursue science communication and encourage inspiration. This partnership program has engaged thousands of students over the 10 years it has been running.
Challenge competitors were asked to make a two-minute video communicating the science behind a possible solution to an everyday problem related to how we move, keep ourselves healthy or make a difference. Videos were graded on creativity, scientific knowledge, persuasiveness and overall presentation.
During the process, students met virtually with their mentors and received resources and support from 3M and Discovery Education. Finalists will receive a trip to the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minn. to compete in the final challenge in October 2012.
