Washington News Council rules in favor of Leschi Elementary

June 18, 2012 | Audience: Families, Community, Staff | Contact: Communications (206) 252-0200

The Washington News Council (WNC) held a hearing on June 16 at Town Hall to consider multiple complaints against KIRO7 Eyewitness News for stories that aired May 10-11 about a custodian at Leschi Elementary.

After hearing detailed presentations, the WNC’s Hearings Board voted to uphold the complaints almost unanimously, saying that the Leschi school community was right in calling the stories “inaccurate, unfair, sensationalized and unethical.”

The WNC hearings are not a legal proceeding, but an open public discussion of media ethics and performance. There are no sanctions for the news media other than publicity. The number of complaints against KIRO 7 totaled 16 – which is the largest number of complaints against any stories in the WNC’s history.
