Seattle schools serve up locally grown food to celebrate Taste Washington Day
Seattle Public Schools joined other schools across the state - and at least 30 local farms - to participate in Taste Washington Day, aimed at celebrating the state’s agricultural diversity and encouraging healthy eating habits.
The annual celebration of Washington-grown foods served in school meals is a partnership between the Washington State Department of Agriculture’s Farm-to-School program and the Washington School Nutrition Association.
Some of the items in the Taste Washington Day elementary school menu were:
• homemade beef and local bean chili (pinto and black beans from Central Bean, Quincy);
• whole wheat roll (Franz Family Bakery, Seattle);
• garden fresh green salad (greens from Sterino Farms, Puyallup);
• carrots (Bolthouse Farms, Prosser);
• cucumbers (Duris Farms, Puyallup);
• fresh plum (Luther Farms, Outlook); and
• milk (Darigold, Central Washington)
