Lowell Elementary competes in national chess tournament; team wins 24th place
Lowell at Lincoln Elementary's chess team won 24th place at the 2012 National Elementary (K-6) Chess Championship May 11-13, 2012 in Nashville, Tenn.
The three-day chess competition consisted of seven games lasting as long as four hours. About 2,200 students from 40 states participated in the competition - with Washington State fielding more than 60 players from 31 schools.
The Lowell chess team won the 24th place overall in the K-5 Championship section and it was the first team that had only two players (a team could have 4 players).
Jan Buzek, left in photo, a fourth-grade member of the team won 4.5 points and was placed 47th out of the 284 players. Marcell Szabo, right in photo, a fifth-grade member of the team won 6 points out of 7 - and with this result he became a National Co-Champion (ranked for the second place with a tie-break system) in the K-5 Championship section.
