Rainier Beach High School students working on urban garden
Maleni Estrada and Tan Tuong, students at Rainier Beach High School, are rolling up their sleeves and digging in their shovels at the Rainier Beach Urban Farm & Wetlands. The girls competed against 40 others to earn their spots on the small team of about 10 student volunteers.
Part of their work includes learning how to grow organic, locally sourced food and nutritious plants.
Co-operated by Seattle Tilth and Seattle Parks and Recreation, the farm is “in the early stages of becoming an urban community learning farm where people learn to grow food in the city.”
In addition, the Rainier Beach High School cooking class will be visiting the garden to plant, tend, harvest and cook the foods they sow. The biology class will also come several times to study the adjoining wetlands.
