Officials from Philips, one of the largest electronic companies in the world with headquarters in Amsterdam, visited STEM @ Cleveland in December to recognize students for their work in “product testing” Phillips headphones.

Steve Pratt, science teacher at Cleveland’s School of Engineering and Design, said that while studying the scientific method in class, a group of his students chose to run qualitive/quantitive tests to determine which headphones was best.

Once students were done, they wrote letters to the companies explaining the data and review of their product. The group testing the headphones wrote a letter to Phillips that made it all the way to Amsterdam and eventually to the hands of its Chief Executive Officer.

In December, Phillips officials in Seattle visited the classroom and brought gifts, which included a set of headphones for each student in Pratt’s seventh-period class, a tote bag, and a poster. The five students who ran the headphone tests, each received $60 insulated headphones.
