Walking School BusWhy did the Bagley Bees cross the road? For health, fun and clean air of course!

About 125 Bagley Elementary School students – an impressive 34 percent of the school – walked to school at least one Friday during January as part of the school’s Walking School Bus campaign and the Let’s Move initiative.

A Walking School Bus is a group of children walking to school with one or more adults to encourage exercise and family fun. Let’s Move is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the first lady, dedicated to solving the problem of childhood obesity.

Walking School BusIn January, Bagley students joined three established Walking School Bus routes – walking 61 miles to school on Fridays. One route often had 18 Bagley students with various siblings, dogs, moms and dads making a colorful parade with their orange flags and pink pedestrian vests.

The students earned prizes for walking, such as backpack charms and the coveted classroom “Golden Sneaker” award, given to the classroom with the most walkers that month.

Health and Fitness teacher Chuck Millsap, left photo wearing hat, along with several parents, added another element to Friday’s Walking School Buses. Students were given a chance to walk laps on the school track before school and earn points for individual backpack charms.
