Leo PheiferLeo Pfeifer, an 8th-grader at Salmon Bay School, right photo, won first place in the middle school category for his entry in the national C-SPAN student video competition. C-SPAN officials will present Pfeifer with a $3,000 check during a school assembly April 6. Students will also have a chance to view Pfeifer’s approximately 7½-minute video.

The theme of C-SPAN’s StudentCam 2012 contest this year was “The Constitution and You” and asked students to select any provision of the U.S. Constitution and illustrate why it is important to them.

The title of Pfeifer’s film is, "Who Owns Free Speech?" You can also view his video at https://vimeo.com/35355261. The video will air on C-SPAN on April 25 on Comcast cable TV.

There were 75 winners in C-SPAN’s Constitution-themed 2012 StudentCam documentary competition, with the First Amendment proving to be the most popular topic. Of the 1,203 entries received, 326 focused on the First Amendment, including 19 of the winning videos.

The grand-prize winner, Hawaii student Matthew Shimura, will receive $5,000 for his documentary highlighting the Fifth Amendment. The other first-prize recipient, Carl Colglazier who won in the high school category, will receive $3,000 for his documentary on intellectual property. In addition, C-SPAN awarded eight second prizes, 16 third prizes and 48 honorable mentions.
