Seattle Public Schools does not use ammonia-treated beef in school meals

March 15, 2012 | Audience: Families, Community, Staff | Contact: Communications, (206) 252-0200

At Seattle Public Schools, we are committed to serving our students the best, freshest food that we can. We do not use ammonia-treated beef (also known as "pink slime”) in our foods.

King’s Command Foods, Inc., where Seattle Public Schools buys its beef, does not use ammonium hydroxide in the processing of either commodity or commercial products (see letter from King’s Command).

We know that healthy nutrition helps promote academic success. We work very hard on making our meals healthy and exciting for our students. To read more about our Nutrition Services, please see this PowerPoint.

For more information on “pink slime,” see this recent Seattle Times story (outside link).
