Northwest band 'Death Cab for Cutie' donates more than $4,300 for Seattle Public Schools meal program
Alternative rock band "Death Cab for Cutie" recently donated more than $4,300 to Seattle Public Schools Nutrition Services department. The money came from $1 donations on tickets sold through the band's fan club for all shows played in 2012.
This is the third time that Death Cab for Cutie, originally from Bellingham, has donated money to the SPS meal program. Wendy Weyer, SPS Nutrition Services director, noted that the band has generously contributed more than $13,500 over the last three years to the department, which serves 7,600 breakfasts and 19,500 lunches each school day Districtwide.
The contribution will be used in the District’s highest-need schools during the 2012 and 2013 school years to help students who have unpaid debts on their school meal accounts.
“With more than 42 percent of District students eligible for free or reduced-priced meals and many more families right on the border of being eligible, we know that many Seattle families are concerned about their children’s access to healthy meals,” Weyer said. “There is a direct connection between good nutrition and academic achievement. We appreciate the efforts of Death Cab for Cutie to help ensure our students’ success in the classroom.”
