SPS physical therapist wins 2012 Washington State Jefferson Award
Cindy Nofziger, a physical therapist at Wedgwood, Lowell, and MLK elementary schools – and the founder of Schools for Salone - is a 2012 Washington State Jefferson Award winner.
The Jefferson Awards, named after U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, are a prestigious national recognition system that honors community and public service in America. It serves as a “call to action for volunteers” in local communities.
Nofziger was one of five local winners chosen by a panel of judges from CityClub, a nonprofit education organization dedicated to informing citizens and building community leadership in the greater Seattle area.
Washington state residents can register and vote online March 12-16 on KING5.com to select the favorite of the five state winners. The state winner will represent Washington at the National Jefferson Awards in June at Washington, D.C.
Nofziger, who has been a Seattle Public Schools employee since 2002, founded Schools for Salone in 2004, The non-profit organization helps residents in Sierra Leone rebuild the many rural schools destroyed during their country’s 10-year long civil war that ended in 2002.
Schools for Salone has built 12 schools and is building another - and has helped supply books and support teachers. Additionally, it has helped build a library and dig water wells in villages.
