Dragon art at WhittierSecond-graders at Whittier Elementary are working with teaching artist Jan Harvey-Smith on a semi-permanent art installation that will cover the wall between the school's first and second floors, near the second-grade classrooms.

The students are creating a dragon done in relief that will measure about 20 feet long by 5 feet wide. The project will be completed by Jan. 23, the official start of the 2012 Chinese Lunar Year - celebrating the Year of the Dragon.

Before starting the large project, Harvey-Smith guided students in making their own dragons in a similar relief style. In December, they worked on the plywood in sections by helping paint on a base coat and stenciling on the dragon scales.
