Superintendent thanks School Board, community partners for support of District's AED program and group of friends who saved man's life
Dr. Susan Enfield, Interim Superintendent, far left, recognized five members of the community who saved the life of Jamie Alls, second from left, who suffered cardiac arrest Nov. 15 while playing basketball with a group of friends at the South Shore K-8 gym.
The group jumped into action: one person called 911, another started chest compressions and John Santos, holding shirt, used an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) recently installed at the school to revive Alls.
At a Dec. 4 School Board meeting, the group received a certificate and an "I Saved a Life" T-shirt from Physio Control, a local company that makes the AED units.
Dr. Enfield thanked the Seattle School Board, which voted unanimously in 2010 to update the District emergency management plan to include a public access automated external defibrillator program. She also thanked the Heart of Seattle Schools – a nonprofit organization that includes the Seattle Seahawks and Sounders, local hospitals, Nick of Time Foundation and other school community partners – which developed a plan for implementing the program.
