Seattle Public Schools ranks 15th in nation in number of new National Board Certified Teachers

Dec. 13, 2011 | Audience: Families, Community, Staff | Contact: Communications, (206) 252-0200

Seattle Public Schools ranked 15th in the nation in 2011 for new National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs). There were 38 teachers who received their NBCTs – bringing the total to 289 in Seattle Public Schools.

The numbers released this month by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards show that Washington state has the second-most new NBCTs (945), behind only North Carolina, and is fourth overall in the total number of NBCTs (6,242).

Six Washington school districts took spots on the list of top 20 districts by number of new certifications.

This accomplishment is considered the highest professional certification a teacher can obtain. Teachers earn this credential through a rigorous assessment that generally takes a year or more to complete. It requires teachers to demonstrate how their work improves student achievement. As part of the process, teachers build a portfolio that includes student work samples, assignments, videotapes and a thorough analysis of their classroom teaching. Additionally, teachers are assessed on their knowledge of the subjects they teach.
