South Lake High School students learn about the law at University of Oregon tour

Dec. 8, 2011 | Audience: Families, Community, Staff | Contact: Communications, (206) 252-0200

Thirteen students from South Lake High School toured the Univeristy of Oregon in October and learned about its legal system - in what was for many, a life-changing experience.

The trip was coordinated by Kevin J. Strothers, founder of the Loyal to Life Academy, with the support of fellow chaperones Jamila Taylor, Greg Pharr, Reggie Wilson and Jerome Welch.

Taylor, a 2007 University of Oregon law graduate, works as a coordinator of the Seattle Youth Violence Prevention Initiative, which targets teens at high risk of perpetuating or being victimized by violence. The program provides student mentorship, intensive case management, street outreach and anger management classes.

At the University of Oregon tour, students learned about the college experience while honing their leadership, team-building, and conflict-resolution skills.

They visited the university’s Lundquist College of Business and Matthew Knight Arena before touring the law school. There, the students met with members of the Black Law Students Association, and had lunch with Lane County Circuit Court judges Cynthia Carlson, Mustafa Kasubhai and Valerie Love. They also networked with undergraduates and law students, and business and legal professionals.

The experience was capped off with a rites of passage program on the final night.
