Event helps students build confidence in, enthusiasm for math
John Muir Elementary was named the Seattle MathFest 2011 Spirit Award Winner and Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary was recognized as second-place runner-up at MathFest held earlier this month.
For the sixth year in a row, Explorations in Math hosted this one-of-a-kind event Nov. 3 at the Rainier Community Center. It was a record-shattering year as about more than 1,200 participants came out to play games and celebrate a positive math culture in their lives.
At the event, first- through fifth-graders and their siblings ventured from game to game – playing in a fully immersive math environment. While playing, students build their confidence in and enthusiasm for math, and see that the community supports their achievements.
More than 100 volunteers and teachers dedicated their evening to helping the students explore math.
