Nathan Hale presentation

Youth from two Student Prevention Groups at Seattle Public Schools received training last month on how to prevent youth substance abuse. These student groups are active in 11 of the School District’s secondary schools and work to promote a healthy school and community.

Your Power, Your Voice• The first training was the “Your Power, Your Voice: Youth Leadership Summit” on Oct. 18. A total of 78 students and 15 staff members from 10 schools gathered with others from around King County to learn about tobacco and youth advocacy. More than half of the attendees at this summit were from Seattle Public Schools.

    • The second training was the “Washington State Prevention Summit” held Oct. 27-29 in Yakima. This statewide event gathered together those working toward the successful and healthy development of our community’s youth, individuals, and families. A total of 36 youth and 12 adults from six different Seattle Public Schools attended the summit to learn about how to prevent teen substance abuse.

Students were taught how to assess and identify their problem, create action plans, and how to evaluate their work. All students and advisors also completed community service projects in the Yakima community.
