Dec. 13, 2011 | Audience: Families, Community, Staff | Contact: Communications, (206) 252-0200

Garfield High student Sam Heft-Luthy, Executive Editor of The Garfield Messenger, won second place in the nation for a news story about military recruiting.

The National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA), with co-sponsor the American Society of News Editors, selected Heft-Luthy's article, Army Strong, as a finalist in the the Story of the Year category.

Judges selected finalists based on the following criteria:
• Value, importance or worth of story
• Quality of reporting and quotes
• Quality of writing and editing
• Credibility and leadership

Heft-Luthy's placement was announced in November at the NSPA’s Fall Convention in Minneapolis. Thanks to a grant from the Garfield PTSA, Heft-Luthy was able to attend and receive this prestigious award in person.
