Parent leaders encourage, train fellow families to support student learning

Dr. Susan Enfield, Interim Superintendent, welcomes a team of parent leaders at the start of the new school year and thanked them for their work in supporting other families.
A diverse group of parent leaders from 11 schools kicked off the start of the school year with a meeting focused on the Parent Leader Project – identifying parents who are “natural connectors.”
The Parent Leader Project, part of the District’s School Family Partnerships Division, provides parents additional support and training so they can effectively engage fellow families.
Participating schools were: Bailey Gatzert, Concord, Dearborn Park, Emerson, Hawthorne, Highland Park, Roxhill, West Seattle, Wing Luke and Van Asselt elementary schools, and Madrona K-8.
The teams reflected on last year’s accomplishments, renewed relationships and brainstormed family engagement strategies for this school year.
One highlight was a visit by Dr. Susan Enfield, Interim Superintendent, who welcomed them. She shared the academic achievement gains that recent data has shown and emphasized again how their work links to student success.
One of the project’s goals is to ensure that all families, especially those facing cultural or language barriers, know what they can do to support their children’s learning.
This work is also a critical piece of the District’s 2012 focus on AGREE: Attacking Gaps, Raising Expectations Everywhere.
