A tomato harvest brought South Shore K-8 and Rainer Beach High School students together last week as they learned how to cook and make tomato soup.

Several South Shore fifth-graders walked to Rainier Beach's Urban Farm, where they harvested tomatoes, and cooked up the delicious soup with the help of the older students. The students said the field trip was their best experience yet.

Sara Waldron, a South Shore teacher who helped supervise the trip, said students applied their skills in science, math, and writing as they went about their tasks. The high school students also helped the fifth-graders map the history of the tomato, she said.

With so many green spaces and resources in the valley, the "community vines" events are aimed at sharing food, fun, and resources between the neighbor schools.

Waldron hopes the next community event will involve the culinary program at Rainer Beach, along with some squash or pumpkin dish.
