Maritime Academy team at Ballard High compete at Survival Suit Race
Four students from the Maritime Academy at Ballard High School participated in the Survival Suit Races last month at the Fishermen's Fall Festival – placing seventh in a field of 10 teams. The Ballard racers were Tanner Levanboski, Jordan Dilday, Billy O'Reilly and Jagger Papac (photo) who raced the event for the first time.
The event, held at the Fisherman's Terminal Sept. 18, consist of racers putting on a survival suit on land, jumping into the water and swimming to a lifeboat. The Maritime Academy has been competing in the event for several years. The Fishermen’s Fall Festival celebrates the local fishing industry, the fishing community and their families.
The goal of the Maritime Academy is to introduce students to the job opportunities available in the many different maritime-related industries. Students enroll in college-preparatory, interdisciplinary marine science, technical education and liberal arts courses at Ballard High School. Lecture, laboratory experiences, and field trips are incorporated into each course.
